ABO Masters Program
The Master in Ophthalmic Optics certificate demonstrates to the public and colleagues that an individual has attained a superior level in ophthalmic dispensing. Any optician who is currently certified by the American Board of Opticianry and has passed the ABO Advanced Exam is eligible to enroll in the program.
Candidates are required to write a technical thesis of at least 2,000 words, which must then be reviewed and approved by the Masters Committee. Upon approval of the thesis by this Committee, the title of ABO Master (ABOM) is conferred.
Candidates have three years to complete the program.
Earning your Master certificate is an excellent way to promote professionalism in opticianry. ABO encourages all qualified opticians to become a part of this program of ophthalmic dispensing distinction.
The fee to enroll in the ABO Master Program is $150 (U.S.)
The American Board of Opticianry Master’s Papers
Each candidate for the prestigious Master Optician status must have been ABO certified for three years, then have attained ABO Advanced Certification status denoting advanced level knowledge and skill. Additionally, each must prepare an original research paper on a topic related to the practice of opticianry.
All the papers submitted in a calendar year are reviewed by the Masters Committee. The papers, by subject and presentation, must add to the body of knowledge for opticianry. The papers selected by the Committee are presented here to expand the level of knowledge for all opticians and to serve as examples for those who are preparing their own papers.
ABO Masters use the initials ABOM after their professional signatures.
